Description

Isabella Swan's move to Forks, a small, perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have been the most boring move she ever made. But once she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen, Isabella's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. Up until now, Edward has managed to keep his vampire identity a secret in the small community he lives in, but now nobody is safe, especially Isabella, the person Edward holds most dear. The lovers find themselves balanced precariously on the point of a knife-between desire and danger.Deeply romantic and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight captures the struggle between defying our instincts and satisfying our desires. This is a love story with bite.

2Not good  Aug 01, 2010
I have to say that I'm rarely annoyed by stories. This was one annoying book. I hate when characters fall in love too quickly for no reason. I hate both main characters. Bella is annoying. Edward is creepy. The end.

The story is engaging but the style of writing is not the best. I read the books once and will continue to follow the series, but won't be rereading the books a second time. It IS worth reading one time at least.

4Wow! An "old" reader stands corrected.  Jul 29, 2010
Let me preface this review by saying I was convinced I'd hate this book. Why? I believed that it could not live up to the hype, and I misjudged it by believing it would be a blood-sucking, trashy novel chock full of teen hook-ups and backstabbing. Plus, I am 30. Could I really relate to this? Well, I was proven wrong on all fronts, delightedly. I had the entire series read in less than two weeks, staying up into the wee hours of the morning reading and reading on my lunch break at work. What I came to like about this series is the originality of Meyers's vampire world, a realistic heroine, and a basic plot line that most people can relate to, mainly first love. I couldn't rate it 5 stars because Meyers's style lacks some of the sophistication I look for in a 5 star novel, and there was one aspect of the Bella-Edward relationship that I found particularly unnerving.

First, Meyers's vampire world is quite original. Without getting into details, the Cullen family is a vampire family that struggles to maintain a normal and moral lifestyle despite their nature. They have a deep respect for humans and strive to retain their own humanity. This brings up the interesting idea that one can rise above whatever his origin may be, good or bad. She also handles the nuances of vampire folklore in interesting ways.

I enjoyed Bella Swan as the protagonist. She is not a picture-perfect, popular beauty queen heroine; she is shy, reserved, likable, intelligent, but not without her own insecurities and a light dose of teen sarcasm, angst, and rebellion. I can see how she would appeal to the average female reader of her age. Looking at the YA series out there targeting young women, most have to do with wealthy, popular, and perfect looking female heroines. It is refreshing to encounter a heroine like Bella.

I would venture to say that the reason this series appeals to an audience of all ages is due mostly to its focus on first love and the pursuit of true love. Readers who enjoy romance in the sweet, innocent, tender, Romeo and Juliet style will be enthralled by Twilight. In this novel, chivalry is not dead, and Bella and Edward are intimate in a way that does not equate to sex, which is a quality few and far between in today's entertainment.

So the drawbacks. Meyers's style is pretty straightforward, and I usually enjoy a bit more sophistication. I probably shouldn't fault her on this as it is a series targeted to a younger audience, and the YA genre tends to push the action and skimp on the description, imagery, metaphors, etc. She does handle the inevitable blood issue tastefully. No gore here.

Many people argue that Bella and Edward's relationship is sweet and pure, while others have said it is dysfunctional. Admittedly, I can see the arguments for both sides. Edward compares Bella to his "own personal brand of heroin," so do we have an unhealthy, co-dependency issue? Is Edward protective? Or is he a stalker? Is he chivalrous or possessive? Does Bella think he is "too perfect" to the point where she is discrediting her own self worth? Or is this simply how crushes operate? One aspect of the relationship that I cannot condone is how Meyers has Bella acknowledge that Edward has been a killer in his early vampire life, but quickly and easily dismisses this fact as one she doesn't care about. Hmmmmm, not sure if this is such a great message to be sending.

Overall, this series is a pleasure. Original, romantic (depending on how you view their relationship), and fast-paced. I am hoping that Meyers writes a 5th book for the series as the last one leaves so much potential for further development.

5So relatable!!!!!!  Jul 28, 2010
I am not a fan of vampires and werewolves, but I love this story! Words are written in a way that you feel as if you're part of the story. Great characters, Fantastic visual!!!
